Can Textile Digital Printing Replace the Screen Printing?

  Looking back the printing industrial’s long journey of development, we will find that more and more new printing technologies has been developed. As the traditional printing technology, the applications of screen printing are wide, and it play an important role in printing industrial. But in recent years, digital printing has developed rapidly, many people feel that it will replace the screen printing in the near future. Is that true?

The substrates are nearly same

  Digital printing can be divided into : acid digital printing, reactive digital printing, pigment printing, sublimation printing and direct to textile printing. Each of them are suitable for different materials printing.

  Compared with digital printing, screen printing don’t have obvious advantages in printing substrates.

  Digital printing can achieve brighter colors, but screen printing has it’s advantages too.

The main advantages of digital printing are the bright colors and the high-resolution images. For colors, digital ink has dye ink and pigment ink, both of them can achieve bright colors, especially dye ink. For images resolution, the print heads on the market are good enough, and the ink drop is small, it means the resolution is high.

  For screen printing, it’s advantages is the special printing slurry, it can achieve gold, silver, pearlized, crackle effect and so on. Besides, it can also achieve 3D effects.

Digital printing feels softer, but screen printing has a stronger color fastness.

  For screen printing, it has a layer of slurry on the fabrics, so it feels rougher than digital printing. But digital printing performs worse than screen printing in color fastness. We need resin as adhesive when printing. The resin content of the screen printing slurry can up to 70%~80%, but the resin content of the digital ink can only up to 10%.

  
   So you can see, it is too earlier to say that digital printing will replace the traditional screen printing, and each of them has their own advantages.
